Three shapes, one class

Commuter, moped-style, or the two outliers

Almost everything on this page is a Class 2 electric bike: pedals, pedal assist and a throttle capped at 20 mph. What separates them is the frame that class is wrapped around, and what you plan to do on it.

Commuters and folders

Distance and storage

$899 to $1,999 · 20 to 28 mph

Upright riding position, fat or all-terrain tires, and folding or step-through frames on most of them. Motors are 500 to 750 W nominal with 1,000 to 1,400 W peaks, and the Heybike Titan and Saturn take a second battery for up to 80 and 100 miles. The Freego City Flow A1 is the odd one: a 27.5 inch Shimano 8-speed at 28 mph with no class rating published.

  • Motor 500 TO 750W NOMINAL
  • Peak 1,000 TO 1,400W
  • Tires 20 TO 27.5 IN
  • Range UP TO 100 MI ON DUAL PACK

In this tier: Heybike Mars 3.0, Heybike ALPHA, Freego City Flow A1

Looks like a moto

$1,099 to $2,199 · 20 mph on throttle

A long low frame, a saddle rather than a perch, and pedals fitted mostly to keep the bike in a class. Macfox runs 500 W peaking at 750 W across its range on 20 x 4 to 20 x 5 inch tires, with the X2 Pro the only one on suspension at both ends and the only one publishing a torque figure at 65 N·m. The M16 is the youth-sized one, on 16 x 4 inch wheels from a 3'11" rider.

  • Motor 500 TO 750W NOMINAL
  • Battery 500 TO 1,080WH
  • Tires 16 TO 20 IN FAT
  • Frame MOPED-STYLE

In this tier: Macfox X1S, Macfox X2 Pro, Freego Shotgun Prime F2 Pro

The two outliers

Worth reading twice

$1,599 to $1,679 · dual motor and moto wheels

The Freego Flash F3 Pro Max runs two 750 W motors on a 2,640 Wh dual pack for 60 to 103 miles — the longest range on this page, and 1,500 W of nominal motor, which is above the federal ceiling whatever the listing says. The Freego X1 SE goes the other way: a dirt-bike chassis on 17 inch moto wheels, held to 750 W nominal so it stays inside Class 2.

  • Motor 750 TO 1,500W NOMINAL
  • Battery 1,620 TO 2,640WH
  • Range UP TO 103 MI
  • Wheels 17 IN MOTO ON THE X1 SE

In this tier: Freego Flash F3 Pro Max, Freego X1 SE

Parts follow the bike

Macfox and Freego frames each carry a platform code with their own parts collection — racks, fenders, tires, brake sets and batteries confirmed for that frame. The Heybike commuters do not have one yet, so parts for those are sourced case by case; ask before you buy and we will tell you what fits.

Buying a commuter

Four numbers that decide how it rides

Every bike here has a motor within a few hundred watts of every other one. These are the numbers that actually separate them.

Nominal vs. peak

Watts

Nominal is what the motor sustains; peak is a burst. A class is measured on nominal, which is why a 750 W bike peaking at 1,400 W is still Class 2. Almost every bike on this page is 500 or 750 W nominal, so watts will not tell you much — the next three numbers will.

Ah x V = Wh

Range

Multiply amp hours by volts. A 48V 15Ah pack is 720 Wh; the dual-pack Flash is 2,640. On a commuter at 20 mph, budget roughly 15 to 20 Wh per mile with pedal assist and considerably more on throttle alone. Published ranges assume you are pedaling.

Tire width

Comfort and cost

16 x 4 up to 27.5 inches on this page. Fat tires float on sand and snow and hide bad pavement; they also add rolling resistance and take range off the same battery. Narrow, larger-diameter wheels roll faster and ride harder.

Frame style

Living with it

Step-through, folding, moped-style or a conventional diamond. Folding decides whether it fits in a trunk, step-through decides whether you can get on it in work clothes, and moped-style decides whether you ride seated with your feet on pegs or on the pedals.

Electric Bikes questions, answered

Are these street legal?
In most states, yes. Every bike here has pedals and pedal assist, and almost all sit at 500 or 750 W nominal, which is the federal ceiling for a low-speed electric bicycle. That makes them Class 2 — throttle to 20 mph — or Class 3 on assist to 28 mph. Two exceptions we flag on their own pages: the Freego Flash F3 Pro Max runs two 750 W motors, and Freego publishes no class rating for the City Flow A1.
What is the difference between a moped-style e-bike and a commuter?
Riding position and what your feet do. A moped-style bike has a long saddle, a low frame and a riding position where the pedals are more of a legal requirement than a way to get anywhere. A commuter puts you upright over the cranks and expects you to use them. Both can be Class 2; they are not interchangeable purchases.
Which has the longest range?
The Freego Flash F3 Pro Max at 60 to 103 miles on a 2,640 Wh dual pack, then the Heybike Saturn at up to 100 miles with its second battery, then the Heybike Titan at up to 80. Range claims across brands are not comparable — use watt hours, which is amp hours times volts.
Can I get a bike small enough for a teenager?
The Macfox M16 is the youth-sized one: 500 W peaking at 750 W on 16 x 4 inch wheels, rated from a 3'11" rider. The Freego Shotgun Lite F0 fits from 4'11". Everything else on this page is built around an adult frame.
How do these ship, and how much assembly is there?
Boxed and insured, free within the lower 48, typically leaving in 1 to 4 business days. The Macfox range arrives about 95% built; on the rest it is bars, front wheel, pedals and a first charge, usually 30 to 60 minutes.

Class 2 is the floor, not the difference.
