These look like small motorcycles and are legally bicycles. That combination is the whole point, and it is also the thing most often got wrong — by riders and by the shops selling them.

Moped-style e-bikes are their own category, and the store used to file them under dirt bikes. Here is the line, drawn properly.
Legally a bicycle
Every bike on this page is Class 2: 500W nominal, 750W peak, throttle capped at 20 mph, with pedals and UL 2849 certification. Federal law treats that as a bicycle — no license, no registration, no insurance in most states.
Why not a dirt bike
An electric dirt bike has no pedals, no class rating and 2,600W to 16,000W on tap, and it is not street legal. These are none of those things. Filing them together does a shopper real harm: one is road-legal and one will get impounded.
Why not a commuter
A city or folding commuter is built around a diamond frame, a rack and an upright riding position. These are built around a moped frame and a throttle, on 4 to 5 inch tires. Same law, different bike, different reason to buy.
What they can actually do
Fat tires and — on the X2 Pro — full suspension handle gravel, fire roads and rough pavement well. They are not built for jumps or motocross. If that is the riding you want, the e-dirt bikes are one page over.

About Moped-Style E-Bikes
What a moped-style e-bike is. A Class 2 electric bicycle — pedals, a thumb throttle and a hard 20 mph ceiling — built on a moped frame with a banana seat and 4 to 5 inch tires. Federal law treats it as a bicycle, so there is no license, registration or insurance in most states, and every model we stock is UL 2849 certified.
Why it is not a dirt bike. An electric dirt bike has no pedals, no class rating and 2,600W to 16,000W on tap, and it is not street legal. These are none of those things. We list them separately because filing them together does real harm: one is road-legal and the other can be impounded.
