Base & Mid Layers questions, answered

What does a base layer actually do?
Two jobs. It moves sweat off your skin so the jersey is not carrying it, which matters most in heat, and it cuts friction where armor meets skin. It is not impact protection; it goes under the gear that is.
Are padded riding shorts worth it?
On long rides, yes. They sit between you and the seat and take the pressure that otherwise concentrates in one spot. Riders doing short laps usually skip them; riders doing all-day trail loops rarely do.
What are banded undersleeves for?
They stop a roost deflector or elbow guard chafing bare skin, and they keep the armor from sliding as you move. They add no protection of their own, so wear them under guards rather than instead of them.

About Base & Mid Layers

What is here. Six pieces from MSR, EVS Sports and Asterisk, $5 to $37 — padded riding shorts, moisture-wicking performance shirts and banded undersleeves.

How riders choose. Base layers do two jobs. The first is moving sweat off the skin so a jersey is not carrying it, which matters most in heat. The second is friction: padded shorts sit between you and the seat on long rides, and undersleeves stop a roost deflector or elbow guard from chafing bare skin. None of it is impact protection — it goes under the gear that is. Every item lists its sizing on the product page — rider gear is sized by measurement, not by the bike you ride.
