Three stages, by seat height
Seat height decides whether a kid can ride, not top speed. Feet flat on the ground at a stop and hands on the bars without stretching. Power is the second question, and every bike here has a limiter.
First bike
$349 to $499 · 10 to 15.5 mphRigid or single-shock frames, drum and disc brakes, and a top speed a parent can walk beside. The two 24V MotoTec mini bikes are rated from age six and hold 17 inch seats; the 36v 300w adds a rear hydraulic shock and three speed settings on a button.

Every dirt bike in this stage stops on discs front and rear; the 48v mini bike runs a rear disc only and carries the highest rider limit on the page at 185 lb. The Demon and the 36v 1000w both hold three speeds, one on a key lock and one on a variable knob.

Hydraulic forks with 110 to 120 mm of travel, discs at both ends, and an IPX6 water rating on the 48v.

Vendors lead with top speed and a recommended age. Neither one tells you whether the bike fits. These four do.
Fit
The first number and the only one that cannot be adjusted. A rider needs both feet flat at a stop. Seats on this page run 17 to 27 inches — measure inseam, not height, because a long-legged eight-year-old fits a bike a taller nine-year-old does not.
Load
A published limit, not a suggestion. This page runs 141 to 185 lb. Over the limit the suspension bottoms out, range drops and the warranty argument gets short.
Speed
Two kinds, and the difference matters. Fixed settings pick from two or three preset speeds on a button, a key or a handlebar switch. A variable knob sets any speed in the range and stays where an adult put it. MotoTec's Pro bikes use the knob; the 24V mini bikes and the Demon use settings.
Terrain
Front wheels here run 10 to 16 inches. A bigger front wheel rolls over a rut instead of stopping in it, which does more for a new rider's confidence than another 500 watts does.
