What to buy and when

Off-road at speed

When you need it

Chest and back protection earns its place the moment you are riding off-road at pace — roost, branches and the impact of landing badly. On a 20 mph commute it is overkill.

Over or under

How to wear it

Some armor goes under a jersey, some over it. Under is cooler and less likely to snag; over is easier to get on and off and usually has more coverage. Neither is more protective by itself.

It should not move

Fit

Armor that shifts on impact protects the place it moved to. Straps snug, no rotation when you twist. Try it on over what you actually ride in, not over a t-shirt.

Different jobs

Armor vs. a jacket

A textile jacket protects against abrasion. Body armor protects against impact. They are not substitutes, which is why armor is usually worn under a jacket rather than instead of one.

Body Armor questions, answered

Do I need body armor for commuting?
Generally no. Chest and back protection is for off-road riding at speed, where roost, branches and hard landings are the risk. A helmet and gloves are the commuting floor.
Over or under my jersey?
Either — check which the item is designed for. Under is cooler and snags less; over is easier to fit and usually covers more. What matters most is that it does not move on impact.

About Body Armor

What is here. Four pieces: the Yozma Off-Road Chest Protector, the Yozma Elbow and Knee Pad Set, the Heybike Dirt Bike Chest Guard and the Heybike Dirt Bike Knee Guard. Between them the collection covers the torso, elbows and knees, which are the contact points in the most common low-speed offs on an electric dirt bike.

How riders choose. Start with the chest. A chest protector or chest guard takes roost, branches and the bars in a fall, and it is the piece most trail riders put on first. Knees come next, since a knee guard covers the joint that hits the ground in a tip-over. The Yozma elbow and knee pad set covers both in one purchase for riders starting from nothing. Fit is everything with armor: it has to stay in place when you stand on the pegs and not ride up when you sit, so check the size information on the product page against your own measurements.

Gear and fitment. Armor carries no bike fitment tag, so there is no badge to match. It pairs with the helmets, goggles and gloves in the neighboring collections, and the Heybike Safety Kit, Helmet and Protection, in Bundles groups a helmet with protection in one box.

Protect the parts that do not heal quickly.
