Voltage is the class system

Four voltages, three stages

Nothing on this page has pedals, so none of it is an e-bike and none of it is street legal. What separates them is the pack: voltage sets the speed ceiling, and everything else follows it.

24V to 52V · youth and first bikes

Start here

$349 to $1,449 · 10 to 45 mph

Seats from 17 inches, curb weights from 39 lb, and speed limiters on every one. The bottom of this stage is a genuine first bike — 24V, 10 mph, rated from age six. The top of it is a 52V Heybike Villain at 45 mph, which is a real dirt bike that happens to fit a 3'11" rider.

  • Voltage 24 TO 52V
  • Top speed 10 TO 45 MPH
  • Seat height 17 TO 30.7 IN
  • Curb weight 39 TO 125 LB

In this tier: MotoTec 36v 300w, Droyd Ravage, Yozma IN 10, Heybike Villain

60V · full-size, mid power

The middle

$1,199 to $2,199 · 1.5 to 6 kW peak

One battery step up and the bikes stop being scaled-down. Full suspension at both ends, hydraulic discs, and packs around 1 to 1.8 kWh. This is where most people should start if they are past their first season and not chasing a 60 mph number. Read the rider rating rather than assuming: it runs from 120 lb on the 78 Forged Phase I to 330 lb on the Yozma IN 10 Pro.

  • Voltage 60V
  • Peak power 1,500 TO 6,000W
  • Top speed 28 TO 50 MPH
  • Max load 120 TO 330 LB

In this tier: MotoTec 60v Pro 2000w, Freego X2 Pro, Yozma IN 10 Pro, Freego Nova 4

72V and up · full-size

$2,499 to $5,999 · 50 to 68 mph

Motorcycle output. 79BIKE and Freego run mid-drives that multiply torque through the gearing; MotoTec and Y-VOLT go direct with more voltage and a bigger pack. Seats reach 35.4 inches, curb weights reach 238 lb, and rider limits reach 330 lb. Track, trail and private land only.

  • Voltage 72 TO 97V
  • Peak power 5,000 TO 35,000W
  • Top speed 50 TO 68 MPH
  • Rider EXPERIENCED ONLY

Parts follow the bike, not the brand

Every bike here carries a platform code, and most have a parts collection behind it. Pick the code once and the store filters to parts confirmed for that exact frame — sprockets, pads, levers, batteries, plastics. It is the difference between buying a brake pad and buying the right brake pad.

Four numbers that matter

This page spans a $349 youth bike and a $5,999 race machine. The same four numbers sort both.

No pedals, no class

Legal status

Without a crank and pedal assist a machine cannot be a low-speed electric bicycle under federal law, whatever its top speed is. Everything here is an off-road vehicle: private land, OHV areas and closed courses. A 20 mph speed setting does not change that.

Peak W vs. rated W

Watts

Peak is a burst the motor holds for seconds. Rated is what it sustains. A "5,500 W" bike is often a 3,000 W bike with a good sprint. Freego and Droyd publish both figures; most brands publish only the larger one.

24V · 48V · 60V · 72V

Voltage

Voltage sets the ceiling, and this page spans all four steps. 24 to 36V is youth, 48 to 52V is entry, 60V is mid, 72V and up is full-size. Two bikes at the same watts on different voltages do not ride the same.

Seat height

Fit

Feet down at a stop or you will drop it, and the ground does not care how much power you bought. Seats here run 17 to 35.4 inches — the tallest is more than double the shortest, on the same page.

Electric Bikes with Pegs (No Pedals) questions, answered

Why does it matter that these have no pedals?
Because pedals are what a US e-bike class is built on. A low-speed electric bicycle needs a crank, pedal assist and a motor at or under 750 W nominal. Take the pedals away and the machine is an off-road vehicle no matter what it weighs or how slowly it goes — which is why a 10 mph MotoTec mini bike and a 68 mph Y-VOLT sit in the same legal category.
Where can I ride one?
Private property with the owner's permission, designated OHV areas, and closed courses. Not on public roads, not in bike lanes, not on multi-use paths. Rules vary by state and by county, and enforcement on OHV land varies more than the law does — check before you load the truck.
Can I register one for the street?
In most states, no. These have no VIN, no DOT-approved lighting package and no e-bike class to fall back on. A handful of states have a process for titling a homebuilt or off-road motorcycle; it is slow, it is state-specific, and none of these ships prepared for it.
Which of these are suitable for a kid?
The ones with a low seat, a low rider limit and a limiter — which is most of the first stage. We keep that cut as its own page at /collections/electric-dirt-bikes-for-kids, sorted by seat height and rider weight rather than by the vendor's age rating, because those ratings are not comparable between brands.
How fast is too fast to start on?
As a rule, stay under 40 mph until you can ride standing, brake in a straight line on loose ground and pick the bike up on your own. Most bikes here have a limiter, so buy the bike you will grow into and set it slow rather than buying slow and replacing it. The one thing you cannot dial down is weight: a 238 lb Venom is a handful at any speed setting.
How do they ship, and what is the return policy?
Boxed and insured, free within the lower 48, typically leaving in 1 to 4 business days; assembly is bars, front wheel and a first charge. Returns are 14 days from delivery, with a 25% restocking fee plus return freight on a change of mind. If we got the order or the fitment wrong, you pay nothing.

About Electric Bikes with Pegs (No Pedals)

Throttle-only electric bikes on moto foot pegs. No crank, no pedal assist, and therefore no e-bike class — these are off-road machines and cannot be registered as bicycles. If you need something road legal, start with the pedal bikes instead.

No pedals means no e-bike class.

Every bike here is off-road only and cannot be registered as a bicycle. If you need something road legal, start with the pedal bikes instead.
