The Freego Nova 5 Mini is not street legal. No pedals, no US e-bike class rating and a 37 mph top speed on level three. The 10 mph first level makes it a sane bike to learn on, but it does not make it road legal. Ride it on private land, closed courses and OHV trails where local rules allow, and gear up - a small bike at 37 mph hurts exactly as much as a big one.

The Nova 5 Mini is a mid-drive dirt bike scaled down rather than a toy scaled up. 1,500 W nominal and 2,500 W peak through a centrally mounted brushless motor, geared through a two-stage reduction - a 23:51 pulley into a 13:56 chain sprocket, 1:9.6 overall - on a 48V 21Ah pack worth 1,008 watt-hours.
What makes it usable for a newer or smaller rider is the three-level speed switch: level 1 caps the bike at 10 mph, level 3 opens it to 37 mph. Freego quotes up to 35 miles in Eco at 10 mph and about 20 miles in Sport at 30 mph. Brakes are two-piston hydraulics on 203 mm rotors at both ends, suspension is hydraulic front and rear, and wheels are a 14 inch front with a 12 inch rear on puncture-resistant tubed tires. Curb weight is 99 lb.

A two-stage reduction, 1:9.6 overall
The Nova 5 Mini drives its rear wheel through a belt pulley reduction of 23:51 and then a chain sprocket reduction of 13:56 - 1:9.6 in total. That is why a 1,500 W nominal motor pulls like it does off the line. Most bikes this size use a hub motor and give you nothing to gear.
10 mph on level one
Level 1 holds the bike at 10 mph. Level 3 gives you all 37. That first level is the reason this is a defensible bike to put a newer rider on - it is a hard cap in the controller, not a request. Freego quotes up to 35 miles of range at 10 mph and about 20 at 30 mph.
1,008 Wh, and a four-hour charge
A 48V 21Ah pack worth 1,008 watt-hours, refilled by a 54.6V 3A charger in four to six hours. That is a sensible amount of energy for a 99 lb bike - enough for a full afternoon at trail speeds without the weight penalty of a 72V pack.

Two-piston hydraulic calipers on 203 mm discs front and rear - the same rotor diameter Freego puts on bikes twice this weight - with hydraulic shocks at both ends and thick inner tubes in puncture-resistant tires. Wheels stagger 14 inch front to 12 inch rear on alloy rims.

Freego's three small machines, and they are not interchangeable. The K1 is a genuine children's minibike at 15.5 mph. The X0 and the Nova 5 Mini both weigh 99 lb and do 37 to 40 mph - they fit smaller riders but they are not toys.

- Freego dispatches in-stock bikes within 1 to 3 business days, then quotes 3 to 8 business days in transit.

- Freego publishes a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty to the original retail purchaser.
