Macfox X1S review: the blank-canvas commuter

The X1S is the bike the rest of the Macfox range grew out of: 500 W, 20 mph, up to 28 miles, and a deliberately plain moped silhouette that owners treat as a starting point. The authorized-dealer review of the most-modified Macfox.

Macfox X1S review: the blank-canvas commuter
AUG 2026·4 min read·Fits: X1S

The short version

The X1S is the bike the rest of the Macfox range grew out of: 500 W nominal, a 20 mph Class 2 ceiling, up to 28 miles of range, and a deliberately plain moped silhouette — for $1,399. It is the most-modified Macfox for a reason. Macfox’s one caution, and ours: leave the electronic control system alone.

Why the plain one is the popular one

The X1S styling is deliberately unfussy: a clean moped silhouette with nothing on it that fights what you do to it afterwards. Macfox leans into that — the frame is high-strength carbon steel with reinforced rear wheel supports, because the factory knows exactly how these get used. The result is the platform owners personalize most: seats, racks, lights, cosmetics, and this store carries 33 X1S-fit parts in its own collection, more than any other Macfox platform. Start with the six upgrades that matter on a daily commuter and a visibility setup.

The one rule

Macfox’s caution, and ours: leave the electronic control system alone. Controller and firmware tampering voids the 2-year warranty and can push the bike out of Class 2 — which is the legal status that lets you ride it without a license in the first place.

Range, honestly

The 48V 10.4Ah pack is the smallest number on the sheet, and it is the honest trade at this price: up to 28 miles is a real daily-commute figure, not a weekend-tour one. A second battery doubles it to 56, and the dual-battery bike is $1,698; note that Macfox ships the second pack separately and that its UL 2271 battery certification covers the single-pack configuration only. If your round trip regularly clears 20 miles, that is the argument for the X2 Pro and its 960 Wh pack instead.

The limited edition

The X1S x Bs.zay is a co-branded limited edition on the same platform — a pearl-white, pearl-powder finish with a shield-shaped LED headlight and gold chain detailing, at the same $1,399. Underneath it is a standard X1S.

Verdict

As a first e-bike, a campus bike, or a project base, the X1S is the easiest entry into the Macfox line: simple, legal everywhere a bicycle is, and built expecting you to make it yours.

Questions, answered

How fast is the Macfox X1S?
20 mph — the Class 2 ceiling. That keeps it street legal as a bicycle: no license, registration, or insurance.
What is the range of the Macfox X1S?
Up to 28 miles on the 48V 10.4Ah battery, or up to 56 miles with a second battery.
Can I modify the Macfox X1S?
Cosmetics, seats, racks, and lights — yes, and the frame is reinforced with exactly that in mind. Leave the electronic control system stock: tampering voids the warranty and can break Class 2 compliance.
What is the Macfox X1S x Bs.zay edition?
A limited-edition X1S collaboration: pearl-white pearl-powder finish, shield-shaped LED headlight, gold chain detailing. Mechanically a standard X1S, at the same price.
