The rules that make lights work

  • Run them in daylight. This is the highest-value habit in the article. Day running lights are standard on cars for a reason, and the same logic covers bikes.
  • Flash plus steady, not flash alone. A lone strobe is attention without depth perception. Pair them and drivers can tell where you are, not just that you exist.
  • Aim the headlight down. The hot spot belongs on the road 20 to 40 feet out, not in oncoming eyes. Blinding the person deciding whether to pull out is self-defeating.
