Two locks of two different types beat one expensive lock, because they demand two different tools. Lock the frame and rear wheel to something that cannot be lifted over or cut, take the battery and display with you, and park where people are. Thieves shop by effort: your job is to be the worst deal on the rack.
An e-bike is heavy, which lulls owners into thinking it is hard to steal. It is not. It rolls, it resells fast, and its battery alone is worth hundreds. The good news: e-bike theft is overwhelmingly opportunistic, and opportunists are beaten by method, not by money.
The method, in order
- Anchor check first. A rack bolted down and closed-loop. Not a sign pole the bike lifts over, not a wooden fence, not scaffolding that unclips.
- Lock one: frame and rear wheel to the anchor. The rear wheel with its motor or cassette is the expensive wheel. Keep the lock high off the ground and the keyway facing down, so it cannot be braced against concrete for leverage.
- Lock two, different type: front wheel to frame. A second lock of a different design means a second tool and double the exposure time. That combination alone moves the thief to the next bike.
- Take the battery and the display. Most packs and many displays remove in seconds. A bike that cannot be ridden away and is missing its most valuable component is a bad prize.
- Park in traffic, not in hiding. Cameras and foot traffic beat a quiet alley every time. And vary nothing valuable: same spot, same hours, every day is how targets get picked.
