Displacement is the ladder

40cc to 250cc, in three steps

On a gas machine, displacement tells you more than any other number: it sets the power, the size of the frame around it and, in practice, who can ride it. MotoTec's range covers a factor of six.

40cc to 52cc · youth

Pull start and a small frame

$299 to $849 · 20 to 32 mph

Mostly air-cooled two-strokes on a pull start, plus two 40cc four-strokes. Seats run 15 to 26 inches and dry weights start at 37 lb. This step also holds the odd shapes — mini choppers with a 15 inch seat, 49cc pocket bikes, and a 52cc go-kart. Several have an adjustable speed limiter; the Alien, Thunder and Demon all do.

Four-stroke singles with electric start and kick start together on the X-series dirt bikes, 12V batteries, and real suspension travel. Seats reach 32 inches and dry weights reach 143 lb. This is also where the utility machines sit — the Rex and Bull kids ATVs and the 98cc Mud Monster kart.

Adult machines

$1,599 to $3,999 · 150cc to 250cc

Four machines and a step change. The X4 and X5 are full-size dirt bikes on 19/16 and 21/18 inch wheels with 35 and 36 inch seats and 231 to 232 lb dry weights — MotoTec quotes 56 and 62 mph with the speed limiter opened up. The 212cc Mud Monster XL seats two and takes 400 lb; the 200cc Titan UTV is a 498 lb machine rated to 662 lb of load.

Parts by model, not by engine size

Two MotoTec dirt bikes with the same displacement can take different plastics, sprockets and brake parts. Each machine here carries a platform code, and the store filters to parts confirmed for that exact frame.

Gas, specifically

Four things to check before you buy gas

A gas machine asks different questions of a buyer than an electric one does. These four come up on nearly every order.

2-stroke vs. 4-stroke

Engine

A two-stroke is lighter, simpler and needs oil mixed into the fuel; a four-stroke has its own oil, runs quieter and pulls harder low down. MotoTec's youth machines are mostly two-stroke; everything from 60cc up on this page is four-stroke.

Pull vs. electric start

Starting

Under 52cc almost everything here is pull start. From 60cc up the X-series adds electric start with a kick backup and a 12V battery — which matters more than it sounds when a small rider stalls it on a hill.

EPA and CARB

Compliance

Most of this range is EPA approved; the Mud Monster karts are also CARB approved. One is explicitly not CARB compliant, and it says so on its own page. If you are in California, check that line before you order.

Seat height and rider limit

Fit

Seats run 15 to 36 inches and rider limits run 120 to 260 lb across 33 machines. A 250cc X5 with a 36 inch seat and a 260 lb limit and a 49cc mini bike with a 20 inch seat are not the same purchase, whatever the brand on the tank says.

MotoTec Gas Powersports questions, answered

What size gas dirt bike should I buy?
Go by seat height first. MotoTec's gas dirt bikes run 21 inches on the Supermoto 50cc up to 36 inches on the X5 250cc, with rider limits from 120 to 260 lb. Displacement follows from that: 40 to 52cc for a first bike, 110 to 125cc once they can ride, 150 to 250cc for an adult.
Do these come assembled?
Partly. Handlebars, front wheel and controls are the usual assembly, plus fuel and oil. Two-strokes need oil mixed into the fuel at the ratio on the machine's own page; four-strokes take SAE 10w/40 in the crankcase and MotoTec publishes the capacity.
Which of these are EPA or CARB approved?
Most of the range is EPA approved and it is stated in each machine's specification list. The Mud Monster and Mud Monster XL go-karts are EPA and CARB approved. One scooter in this range is explicitly not CARB compliant and says so on its page. If you are in California, read that line before ordering.
Can I ride one on the road?
No. None of these ships with a VIN or a DOT lighting package, and MotoTec sells them for off-road use. Private property, OHV areas and closed courses.
How do they ship?
Boxed and insured, free within the lower 48, typically leaving in 1 to 4 business days. The larger machines are heavy — the Titan UTV boxes at 565 lb — so plan for a curbside drop and a second person.

Displacement first, then the frame.
