Free, then cheap, then expensive

Most suspension complaints are setup, not hardware. Work down this list and a lot of riders never reach stage three.

Stage 1 · $0

Set your sag

Free, one evening

Nothing on this page will help until the suspension is set for your weight. Sag is the single biggest change you can make and it costs nothing — roughly a third of total travel with you on the bike in riding gear.

Springs and oil

Correct the rate

If sag is right and the bike still wallows or blows through its travel, the spring rate is wrong for you. A spring is far cheaper than a fork, and heavier or lighter riders than the design target almost always need one.

Forks and shocks

New hardware

Adjustable cartridge forks and rebuildable rear shocks. Real damping control, real money, and worth it only once the setup underneath is right.

Four words worth knowing

Suspension, in plain English

About a third of travel

Sag

How far the bike settles under your weight. Too little sag and the wheel skips over bumps; too much and it blows through the travel and bottoms out. Set this before touching a clicker.

Springs hold, damping controls

Compression

Compression damping controls how fast the suspension moves down. It does not hold the bike up — the spring does that. Riders who dial in compression to stop bottoming are usually fixing a spring problem the hard way.

The one that causes crashes

Rebound

Rebound controls how fast it comes back. Too slow and the suspension packs down over successive hits until it has no travel left; too fast and the bike bucks you. Set it so the wheel returns quickly without kicking.

Rider weight, not bike weight

Spring rate

Spring rate is chosen for the rider. Manufacturers spec for an average, so if you are well under or over that, no amount of clicker adjustment will fix it — you need a different spring.

Suspension questions, answered

How do I set sag?
Measure from the axle to a fixed point on the frame with the wheel off the ground, then again with you on the bike in full riding gear, feet on the pegs, someone steadying you. The difference should be roughly a third of total travel. Adjust preload to get there. If you run out of preload adjustment, you need a different spring.
My suspension bottoms out. Do I need stiffer damping?
Probably not — you likely need a stiffer spring. Compression damping controls the speed of the movement, not how much load it can hold. Winding compression in to stop bottoming makes the ride harsh everywhere else.
What is packing down?
Rebound set too slow. Over a series of quick hits the suspension does not have time to extend before the next one, so it progressively runs out of travel and the bike feels like it is sinking. Speed the rebound up.
How do I know a part fits my bike?
Every part carries a fitment code and we check it against a compatibility database before listing it. Filter any collection to your bike, or email a photo of your frame plate to hello@motorhabit.com and we will answer within 24 hours.
What if it does not fit?
Send it back. 14 days to start a return on any part, no restocking fee, uninstalled and in its original packaging with the hardware bag unopened. If our fitment data was wrong, we cover the return shipping too — that one is on us, not you.

About Suspension

Most electric dirt bikes leave the factory set up for nobody: stock clickers, stock preload, and a rider who never checked either. Suspension is the upgrade people do last and wish they had done first.

Front. A cartridge kit replaces the damper-rod internals of the Light Bee X fork with a real cartridge: 24 clicks of compression, valved for riders between 130 and 220 lb. Rear. A piggyback shock with rebound and preload adjustment and a spring rate you can actually match to your weight, 265 mm eye to eye for the Light Bee X.

Set sag first, clickers second. The setup-by-rider-weight guide gives starting points, and every part here shows which bikes it is verified for.

Set it up before you spend.
