Gearing math for the Light Bee: what 48T vs 58T actually does

Everyone tells you a bigger sprocket gives you more torque. Nobody tells you what it costs in top speed, or how to pick the number for the riding you actually do. Here is the math, a calculator, and the install.

The short version
  • A bigger rear sprocket trades top speed for acceleration and hill climb, roughly one for one.
  • Going from 48T to 58T is about a 20% change in both directions. More pull, less top end.
  • Trail and technical riding: go up. Open ground and long straights: stay put or go down.
  • A bigger sprocket needs a longer chain. Buy both or the job stops halfway.
  • Install takes about 25 minutes with a 4 mm hex, a 13 mm socket, and a chain breaker.

The most common upgrade on a Light Bee is also the most misunderstood. A rear sprocket is cheap, it bolts on in half an hour, and every group chat has someone swearing that 58T changed their bike. They are not wrong. They are just leaving out the part where they gave up 8 mph to get it.

Gearing does not create power. The motor makes what it makes. Gearing decides where that power lands: at the low end where you climb, or at the top end where you run. Every tooth you add to the rear pulls the whole curve down. This guide covers what that means in numbers, so you can pick a sprocket for how you actually ride instead of what someone posted.

How gearing works

Two reductions sit between the motor and the ground. The primary reduction is inside the case and you do not touch it. The secondary reduction is the chain: your front sprocket and your rear sprocket. Multiply the two and you get total reduction, which is the number that matters.

Total reduction does two things at once, in opposite directions. It multiplies torque at the wheel, and it divides wheel speed. Raise it and the bike pulls harder and tops out sooner. Lower it and the bike runs faster and feels lazy off the bottom. There is no setting that gives you both.

That is the whole trade. Anyone selling a sprocket as free performance is selling you one half of a subtraction problem.

What stock gives you

The Light Bee X leaves the factory geared for a compromise: enough top end to be useful on open ground, enough bottom end to get up most things without cooking the motor. It is a reasonable place to start and a poor place to stay if your riding is lopsided in either direction.

Rear tire [00.0] in Rolling diameter. A taller tire acts like a smaller rear sprocket.
Measure yours before you order

Sprocket counts vary by model year and by whatever the last owner did. Count the teeth on your rear sprocket before you buy. Takes two minutes, saves a return.

Every option, compared

Here is what each common rear sprocket does relative to stock. Percentages are the honest way to read this, because they hold true no matter what your front sprocket or tire is doing.

A sprocket does not add power. It decides where the power you have already paid for shows up.

Mechanical ceiling only. Real top speed lands lower once you add rider weight, tire pressure, terrain, battery sag, and wind. Treat the difference between the two numbers as the useful part, not the numbers themselves.

What it costs you

Top speed is the obvious trade. These are the ones people find out later.

Motor heat

Taller gearing at low speed is what cooks motors. If you are grinding up a long climb at 6 mph on a 48T, the motor is working at low RPM with no airflow. Going to 58T lets it spin faster for the same ground speed, which usually means it runs cooler on climbs. This is the real argument for a bigger sprocket and it rarely gets made.

Chain length

A bigger rear sprocket wraps more chain. You cannot reuse the stock chain on a 58T without adding links, and stretching an old chain over a new sprocket wears the new sprocket into the shape of the old one within a few rides. Replace both together.

Ground clearance

A 58T hangs noticeably lower than a 48T. On rocky trail, that is the first thing to find a stone. A sprocket guard is cheap insurance, and bent teeth are not repairable.

Range

Gearing does not change efficiency much on its own. What changes is behavior: with more pull available, most riders use more throttle, more often. Expect range to drop a bit even though the math says it should not.

Check clearance before you ride
  • Spin the wheel through a full rotation with the bike on a stand. Watch for the chain touching the swingarm or the guard.
  • Compress the suspension fully by hand and check again. Clearance changes through travel.
  • Confirm the chain tension at the tightest point in the rotation, not the loosest.

Which one to run

Pick by the riding that fills most of your battery, not the ride you brag about.

Tight woods and singletrack 58T Constant low-speed climbing and clutch-like control. Top speed is not part of the ride.
Mixed trail and fire road 52T Most of the pull, most of the top end. The default if you are unsure.
Open desert or track 48T Stock is already right. Save the money for suspension.
Long flat runs, big miles 42T Highest ceiling. Expect it to feel soft off the line.
Heavy rider, steep terrain 58T Weight and grade both ask for the same thing: more torque, cooler motor.

The install

About 25 minutes if the chain is coming off anyway. Longer the first time.

What you need
  • 4 mm hex key for the sprocket bolts
  • 13 mm socket and wrench for the axle
  • Chain breaker and a spare master link
  • Torque wrench that reads in the [00] to [00] Nm range
  • Thread locker, medium strength
  • A stand, or a milk crate and a friend

Get the wheel off the ground

Bike on a stand, power off, key out. Never work on the drive with the battery live.

Break the chain

Find the master link and pop it, or use the breaker on a standard link. Keep the old chain to measure length against the new one.

Pull the rear wheel

Loosen the axle nut, back off the adjusters, and slide the wheel forward. Note the order of the spacers as they come out. Phone photo beats memory.

Swap the sprocket

Unbolt the old sprocket from the carrier. Clean the mating face. Put the new one on with thread locker on every bolt, tightened in a star pattern.Torque: [00] Nm · star pattern · thread locker

Size the new chain

Wrap it with the wheel at the middle of its adjustment range, not slammed forward. Add links until you can meet with slight slack, then remove one and check again.

Set tension and torque the axle

Set slack at the tightest point of the rotation. Adjusters even on both sides or the wheel sits crooked.Torque: [00] Nm axle · slack [00] to [00] mm

Recheck after the first ride

New chains stretch fast in the first hour. Recheck slack and sprocket bolt torque after ride one, then again after ride three.
